Supporting Indigenous Language Revitalization (SILR) is dedicated to promoting and supporting the revitalization of Indigenous languages. SILR aspires to a future where Indigenous languages are not only preserved but are also thriving and commonly spoken in various settings like homes, schools, workplaces, and across the land. SILR’s primary focus is on increasing accessibility to language programming and developing resources that aid in maintaining and enhancing the health and vibrancy of Indigenous languages in communities. This effort is aimed at benefiting both current and future generations. SILR works in collaboration with the University of Alberta and the BHP Foundation.

We take an experimental approach to tackling fundamental questions in plant ecology, evolutionary biology, behaviour, and conservation biology. In addition to the pure discovery aspects of the work in the lab, we regularly incorporate a use-inspired approach for addressing issues related to invasive species, climate change, grassland ecology, and any other pressing issue of the day.

The Institute of Prairie and Indigenous Archaeology (IPIA) is an Indigenous-led institute with a commitment to continuing to support Indigenous-engaged archaeological research, to developing pedagogical approaches to integrating Indigenous ways of knowing and being into archaeological teaching and training, and to changing cultural heritage policies in response to the needs of Indigenous communities in western Canada. The IPIA is the first of its kind in Canada and the first Institute focused on Indigenous archaeology in the world.

The Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology (ISSET) is a University of Alberta institute that embraces a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines related to the exploration of space. ISSET builds on long-standing institutional excellence in space research in order to take advantage of emerging, cross-disciplinary opportunities and to develop partnerships with other institutions, agencies and industry.

Since 2020, the UNESCO Information For All Programme (IFAP) Working Group on Information Accessibility (WGIA) has hosted the Artificial Intelligence for Information Accessibility (AI4IA) Conference. AI4IA is hosted annually on 28 September, in commemoration of UNESCO’s International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI), and has enjoyed the support of partners from all over the world, including the Kule Institute for Advanced Studies (KIAS) and AI for Society (AI4S), both at University of Alberta, Canada; the International Centre for Information Ethics (ICIE); Future Africa at the University of Pretoria, South Africa; the Centre for New Economic Diplomacy (CNED) in ORF, India; and the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica. The aim of this specific event is on promoting, but also understanding the barriers to, inclusive artificial intelligence. AI can be very beneficial to society but if abused it can also be very harmful. The theme therefore raises a range of issues, including the relationship between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Law, AI and Ethics, media and our right to know, creativity and innovation. It is necessary to understand how AI can be made inclusive, thereby enabling the widest cross-section of society.

The Canadian Health Services and Policy Alliance (CHSPRA) brings together organizations and from across the health system community to collaborate on specific and common priority initiatives. Stemming from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research – Institute of Health Services and Policy Research’s (CIHR – IHSPR) IHSPR Pan Canadian Vision and Strategy (Executive Summary | Full Report), the Alliance has successfully developed a number of health system enabling assets that have served our collective community over the past several years.

Using a voluntary workgroup structure, the Alliance provides leadership and the enabling infrastructure to build a shared workgroup outcome, project plan, and support the development of the planned products to support the broader constituencies. The Training Modernization working group gave rise to the development of alternate career paths for HSPR PhD students and the establishment of the successful Impact Fellowship program. The Impact Assessment working group has successfully extended the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences impact framework to begin to articulate the value of HSPR research to the health system beyond a transactional traditional bibliometric approach.

Through its focused “shared objective and outcome” based approach, the Alliance has demonstrated the value of a pan-Canadian forum for output and outcome-based collaboration. By providing the leadership and the necessary discipline and infrastructure, CHSPRA aspires to support the development of the enablers needed to translate science into practice.

The University of Alberta Master of Science in Internetworking (MINT) graduate program prepares students for a career as a network engineer.
It is a two-year, fully-accredited, course-based program led by industry leaders and jointly offered by the Faculties of Engineering and Science through their Departments of Computing Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering. The program has been operating since 2004 and is designed with the working professional in mind. It teaches up-to-date technical knowledge, advanced problem solving skills and the industry experience needed to lead large-scale Internet project teams as well as develop the architectures for complex network implementations.
